Don’t give littering a chance: Morges sets an example

Les équipes d'ambassadeurs de l'IGSU sensibilisent à Morges à la problématique du littering.

To prevent Lake Geneva from becoming a garbage dump: for many years, the City of Morges has been relying on the support of the “Communauté d’intérêts pour un monde propre” (IGSU) to curb littering. This year, teams of IGSU ambassadors will once again begin their awareness-raising tour of French-speaking Switzerland in Morges. Until autumn, they will be encouraging passers-by to dispose of their waste properly in more than 50 cities and towns throughout Switzerland.

Strolling along the lake in Morges goes hand in hand with good restaurants, a beautiful view and lush plants – but not with litter. To keep Morges clean, teams of IGSU ambassadors will start their awareness-raising tour of French-speaking Switzerland on May 17, 2023 in the idyllic town of Morges on the shores of Lake Geneva. On May 19 and 20, as well as from May 25 to 27, they will be found, among other places, in the Parc de l’indépendance, on the lakeside promenade and near the train station, where they will address passers-by directly to encourage them to dispose of their waste properly. “The teams of IGSU ambassadors are familiar with the city’s hot spots and will ensure that tourists and residents alike think about their behavior with regard to waste,” says Eric Hostettler, head of the City of Morges’ Office of Urban Cleanliness.

Broad interest in a proven measure

After their intervention in Morges, the teams of IGSU ambassadors will visit 50 other cities and towns in Switzerland. Since 2007, the ambassadors have been travelling throughout Switzerland every summer to raise awareness of littering and recycling issues in a friendly and humorous manner. In autumn and winter, they also visit hiking trails and ski resorts. The IGSU ambassador teams also work to reduce littering at events such as street food festivals, city festivals and fairs, and use workshops to raise awareness of littering among students from kindergarten to vocational school.

Support for cities, communities and schools

The IGSU also supports cities, communities and schools with numerous other preventive awareness-raising measures to combat littering. One example is the IGSU’s national Clean-Up Day, which is supported by the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN, the Swiss Association for Municipal Infrastructure ASIC and the Pusch Foundation. This year’s IGSU National Clean-Up Day will take place on September 15 and 16. In cooperation with Swiss Recycling, the IGSU has also developed free educational material on littering and recycling for teachers, awarded the No Littering label to cities, municipalities and schools that are actively engaged in combating littering, and supported institutions in implementing site sponsorship projects.

During the summer, IGSU ambassadors will be on mission in all regions of the country: https://www.igsu.ch/fr/ambassadeurs/la-tournee-2023/
