Freeway vignette 2023 is mandatory from Wednesday

From February 1, drivers will only be allowed to drive on Swiss highways and freeways with the 2023 freeway sticker. Drivers who drive on the freeway without visibly displaying the freeway sticker will be fined 200 Swiss francs.

The transitional period for affixing the 2023 freeway sticker to the windscreen expires tomorrow. The 2022 sticker is still valid until Tuesday, January 31, 2023. The new sticker 2023 is mandatory from Wednesday, February 1, 2023, for all who travel on highways and freeways.

Where to place the vignette?

The vignette must be placed on the inside of the windshield, clearly visible. The law prohibits, among other things, attaching the sticker with adhesive tape or keeping it in the glove compartment. The sticker must be affixed to the edge of the windshield or behind the inside mirror without obstructing the driver’s view. Although there is no law that only the valid vignette may be affixed to the windshield, the TCS advises removing the old vignette. The police can fine drivers if their visibility is restricted by one or more vignettes.

Where can the freeway vignettes be obtained?

The freeway vignette is compulsory for all motor vehicles and trailers (up to 3.5 tons) traveling on freeways and highways in Switzerland. It costs 40 francs and can be obtained at TCS contact points, post offices, garages, gas stations and customs or road traffic offices. It is valid from December 1, 2022 until January 31, 2023. Drivers who do not have a correctly affixed and visible vignette will face a fine of 200 francs and will also have to purchase a valid vignette directly.

When will the electronic toll sticker be introduced?

The e-vignette will be introduced in the course of 2023. The Federal Council will decide on the introduction date in the second quarter of 2023. The introduction during the course of the year has the advantage that the systems will be optimized step by step and the BAZG can thus approach the sale for the vignette year 2024 with the experience gained. The e-vignette will not replace the existing adhesive vignette; both variants will be used in parallel. A new feature of the e-vignette is that it is linked to the license plate instead of the vehicle. This has the advantage that no additional vignette has to be purchased when changing vehicles or changing numbers. The e-vignette will be available via a webshop.

Beware of false e-vignettes

The federal government recently informed that a supposed ” Swiss e-vignette ” is being offered on various websites. These are criminal phishing activities. It is advised against buying these e-vignettes – the ” Swiss e-vignette ” is currently not yet for sale.

Tips from the TCS

The TCS recommends removing the old vignette before attaching the new one to the windshield. The best way to do this is with a scraper for the glass ceramic stove. Simply slide the blade under one corner of the vignette and detach it from the windshield. The residue of the adhesive can also be removed with the scraper if you have previously moistened it with water.
