  • From 3 January 2023, Sunrise will abolish the obsolete 2G standard.
  • Until now, Sunrise had not yet deactivated 2G on its mobile network in order to offer customers a longer transition period.
  • Customers who still use M2M/IoT (B2B) devices or solutions that work only with 2G connections will be assisted in the transition to a more modern mobile standard (4G/5G).
  • The Sunrise mobile network is the only mobile network in Switzerland to have received the highest "EXCEPTIONAL" rating from connect magazine six consecutive times. Sunrise offers the fastest and largest 5G network in Switzerland.

"For the benefit of our customers, we have voluntarily facilitated a flexible transition to a more modern mobile generation. Since 2G connections are practically no longer used, we will deactivate this standard at the beginning of next year," says André Krause, CEO of Sunrise.

Only a very small number of customers still use devices that require 2G and are therefore affected by this removal. Sunrise has informed them by mail and is assisting them in their transition to new solutions based on a more modern mobile phone standard (such as 4G or 5G). Private customers can get advice in the Sunrise Shops (p.e.g. with regard to SIM card and device changes). For B2B solutions, small businesses can contact 058 777 00 00 and large companies can contact their Account Manager.

The replacement of the old mobile telephony standards by the new, more efficient generations corresponds to a normal technological evolution. Sunrise plans to abolish the 3G standard, which is also increasingly obsolete, in the next 3-4 years.

Sunrise's mobile network is both the leader and the only mobile network in Switzerland to have been awarded the highest "EXCEPTIONAL" rating six times in a row. With 5G, the latest generation of mobile telephony, Sunrise also offers the fastest and largest network in Switzerland, as shown by the connect measurements: "By combining 5G coverage and 5G data rates, Sunrise is number one".

Sunrise already serves more than 1048 cities/towns with high-speed 5G (up to 2 Gbps) and more than 96.7% of the population with basic 5G (up to 1 Gbps). The current coverage map with the address search engine as well as the list of localities served are available on the Sunrise website.
