From Tuesday, January 3, 2023 and during the winter period, the Vaud Cantonal Police and the Vaud Communal Police are conducting a road safety campaign to make users aware of the importance of driving with a vehicle that is in perfect condition (windows, lighting, clear license plates and appropriate equipment). The police insist on winter safety instructions to prevent traffic accidents.

As every year, during the winter period and due to weather conditions, vehicles are covered with snow or ice. This campaign is a reminder of the importance of driving with a vehicle that is in perfect condition, allowing optimal visibility and safety on the road. Therefore, before taking to the road, the lighting devices, windows, mirrors and roof must be cleared of ice or snow in order to avoid the risk of an accident and to respect other road users when travelling. License plates must be legible and tires in good condition. Failure to comply with these rules may result in the revocation of a driver’s license and the immobilization of the vehicle while it is being repaired.

This year, the Vaud police have adopted the new visual “92% of drivers de-ice their vehicles correctly” from the Valais cantonal police, to raise awareness among motorists. The campaign is visible thanks to more than 1’500 posters placed throughout the canton from mid-January. Preventive actions with the distribution of scrapers, but also repressive actions, are carried out by the staff of the cantonal and communal police forces to fight against the problem of vehicles that do not comply with traffic regulations.

It is a good idea to ask yourself a few questions before taking to the road during the winter period:

  • Have I defrosted all the windows in the vehicle?
  • Have I cleared all snow from the vehicle, including the roof?
  • Have I filled the windshield washer fluid?
  • Have I turned on the lights?
  • Do I have tires in good condition (preferably winter tires)?
  • Do I intend to adjust my speed to the road and traffic conditions?
  • Have I checked the vehicle’s maintenance status?
  • Do I need any other advice? Dégivrer son véhicule – votrepolice.ch
