The year 2023 marks the 300th anniversary of the death of Major Davel. To pay tribute to him, various activities and events will be proposed in the canton throughout the year, following on from publications already published in 2022. The State Council is pleased that the memory of the Vaudois hero is being honoured through initiatives aimed at deepening historical knowledge about Major Davel and disseminating this knowledge to the public, particularly young people. In this respect, certain projects are supported by the State.

Among the highlights of 2023 (all dates on www.vd.ch/davel), an exhibition will be publicly unveiled on January 24 at the Cantonal Archives. Designed in a participatory and itinerant way, it is also intended for students at gymnasiums, since it will be visible in several of these establishments.

An official event will be organized on April 24, the day of Major Davel’s execution, jointly by the canton of Vaud and the commune of Bourg-en-Lavaux, the place of origin of Jean Daniel Abraham Davel. Upon invitation, it will be open to the citizens of the commune.

On January 29, the Opéra de Lausanne will present the show “Davel”. A university symposium organized on April 28 and 29 will provide a better understanding of how the man became a key figure in the history of Vaud. In this context, historical walks are also planned.

Finally, during the summer, the public will be able to attend the popular show “Le mystère Davel” in Bourg-en Lavaux, on the initiative of the commune’s authorities.

For the State Council, it is important that the memory of the Waldensian hero be honored through initiatives that allow for the deepening and dissemination of historical knowledge related to Major Davel, particularly among young people. Such a context is likely to encourage the debate and reflections that Davel’s career still inspires today.
