Pork and food taboos

Let's talk about food, that will change us of geekery of any kind. I come from a pretty standard education: food, since it is that we're going to talk, not banned, or at least not aware. Side meat, pork, chicken, Turkey and beef are consumed apart from more or less equal. The horse just a little more behind, because it is difficult to find the right horse. The lamb is rare because – it's too good. Very quickly, I realized my Muslim friends were not eating should not eat pork. It don't not addressed me more than that: so much the better, there's more for others, I thought. But, because – the kids that asks questions that make you think, and also because – I learned that non-Muslims eat pork either, I wondered the next 2 existential questions:

  1. Why don't Muslims eat pork?
  2. Who doesn't eat pork except Muslims?

That is very succinctly, drafts of answers. The ban on pork in religion is present in the Old Testament and the Koran:

"You are banned the beast found dead, blood, the flesh of swine, this what has been used another name than that of Allah…" [Le Coran, 5:3]

"You stand for impure pork because while having the hoof cloven, split in two nails, he cud not." "You don't eat their flesh nor will not touch their bodies, you hold them for unclean." [Lévitique, 11:7-8]

Among others. He is therefore banned from feeding among Muslims, but also in the religions and Jewish, priori, more generally, among some Christians. The history of these biblical writings, overall, is that these happy teens at the time of the Old Testament once, got a food, and got a tapeworm and we been very sick, even a little bit dead. So pork was considered dirty. Besides, it is well known, the pig that rolls in the mud. Pig, pig! Otherwise, except the writings of biblical and Koranic, other arguments are provided:

  • Pork would be the vector of not less than 70 diseases, and especially the the tapeworm. And even if you cook well. The tapeworm in the brain that causes memory loss, and the worm in my eyes it's see troubled.
  • Pork meat, it's fat. And it causes the cholesterol, and cholesterol, do not provoke him, otherwise he stops the heart.
  • The pig lives in the mud, manure and dirt. He eats human excrement.
  • Pork is lewd: it is the only animal who invited his companions to mate with his partner. The Americans also do that, but it's because they eat a lot of pork.
  • Pork is symbol of hypocrisy because it is the only animal to have the hoof split but do not ruminate about.

As you can see, the arguments above won't be enough to convince me of the toxicity of my pork chop. However, I respect the religious beliefs of each, although I find the arguments found on the Web relatively unconvincing… Sources:

PS: Inevitably, as soon as it is pronounced wrote the term 'religion', we provoke sensitivities. I was careful to limit this, but there are reactions that cannot be avoided even with the best will in the world. I'll be so uncompromising if comments go into a spin, and will exercise my right to moderation if necessary.
